Shoebury golfer Richard McEvoy saw his hopes of winning a place in the Open Championship at Royal Troon via the International Final Qualifying competition end in disappointment yesterday.
Just 17 places in the starting line-up for the Open, being played in Scotland in two weeks' time, were on offer for a star-studded field of 120 playing 36 holes at Sunningdale.
He got off to a solid start on the Old Course in the morning with a 71, but then shot 76 in the afternoon to finish well off the pace on 147.
Although, top star Colin Montgomerie squeezed through after a play-off, players to miss out included Justin Rose, ex-US Masters champion Ian Woosnam, current Ryder Cup skipper Bernhard Langer and his predecessor, Mark James.
