Shop workers have been warned to be on their guard after three suspicious men tried to exchange two £10 notes.
A police spokesman said the group, all of eastern european appearance, went into the Blackwater Leisure Centre in Park Drive, Maldon, and asked to change the cash for a £20 note.
The men, who all spoke little English, are believed to have left the centre in an H registration black Rover 216 car.
The spokesman said: "Staff need to be more vigilant especially after the recent spate of fake Scottish bank notes in the district."
