Southend United manager Steve Tilson today ruled out a Roots Hall return for former Blues defender Spencer Prior.

The experienced centre back, who made 156 appearances for the Shrimpers during the early 1990s, had been linked with a move back to his hometown club after being released by Cardiff City.

But Tilson confirmed he would not be signing the Southend-born 33-year-old despite having held talks with the ex-Manchester City man.

"I did meet up with Spencer but at this stage he wants to try and play at the highest level he possibly can," said the Seasiders chief.

"He's an experienced defender who I played with for Southend and he went on to play for some very big clubs. He would have done a good job for us I'm sure, but he doesn't want to drop down to our division at the moment."

And Tilson also revealed he has made inconsistent Shrimpers striker Tes Bramble move from Ipswich to base himself closer to the Blues' Boots and Laces training ground.

"Living closer to the club will benefit Tes," said Tilson.

"It can't have been easy for him coming down from Ipswich every day -- especially when he can't drive and I think this is going to help him."
