Police in Rayleigh are urging residents not to be complacent about home security for the rest of summer.

In the past few weeks, a number of burglaries have been reported in which entry was made through windows or doors left open or unlocked.

Police said there had also been a rise in incidents in which burglars had taken car keys left on view near front doors and stolen the owner's car parked on the driveway.

Acting Inspector Kevin Diable-White, from Rayleigh community safety, said the warmer summer evenings often meant many people left windows or doors open to let in cool air while they slept.

He said: "I'm asking all householders to take a few simple steps to prevent them becoming such a victim. Before going to bed or leaving the house, check all exterior doors and windows to make sure they are shut and locked."
