Commuters today suffered misery on the way to work as a Tube strike in London ground services to a halt.

Services on London Underground were run down last night after last-ditch talks failed to avert the 24-hour strike.

Thousands of drivers, signallers and maintenance workers walked out from 6.30pm yesterday causing the worst travel disruption in the capital for two years.

Liza Montgomery, of Southchurch Road, Southend, said: "It was a nightmare.

"More people than I have ever seen were queuing outside Fenchurch Street station for cabs.

"I was able to walk to Tower Pier to get a river boat which helped immensely but I felt so sorry for those waiting for buses and cabs.

"I have no sympathy whatsoever for these drivers.

Peter Slattery, Chairman of the Rail Travellers' Association, which speaks for Southend, Billericay and Basildon commuters, said: "I work in East London and have added an addition twenty minutes onto my journey this morning."
