The League Managers Association today pledged to back former Southend United boss Steve Wignall in his legal wrangle with the League Two club all the way to the High Court.

Wignall is fighting Blues for around £25,000 in unpaid compensation, owed to the 49-year-old following his Roots Hall sacking last November.

However, the Shrimpers' co-owner, Ron Martin, has retaliated by launching a £50,000 counter-claim against the ex-Colchester chief on the grounds of wasting money on certain players.

But John Barnwell, chief executive of the LMA, said he will support Wignall all the way in his battle against his former employers.

"Managers like Steve don't earn the same money as top level coaches and can't afford to throw money at expensive solicitors," explained Barnwell.

"So, it is the LMA's job to support our members and give them a free facility to all the legal advice they need. We are more than prepared to back Steve all the way to the High Court if necessary.

"The dispute with Southend has been a long, drawn out process so far, and we don't expect to get this case to a tribunal until the early part of the new year."
