Maldon Town midfielder Dean Parratt is sweating on his future after an exploratory operation on his knee.
Parratt suffered the injury a month before the end of last season while playing for Braintree Town in the Ryman League premier division.
At the start of the summer he made the switch to Dr Martens eastern division side Maldon, but he has just gone under the knife to determine why his injury was not healing.
He now has to sweat it out and wait for the specialist's verdict on July 20 to see whether it is going to be a couple of months on the sidelines or time to hang up his boots.
Parratt, 34, said: "I was running on it for a while, but the specialist decided that he should do keyhole surgery to see what was wrong.
"He cleared up a lot of the debris and it is feeling better, but he isn't able to give me the full upshot of what is wrong until later in the month.
"It's then that I'll find out and see what I have to do."
