The final section of the new A120 opens next Friday amid fears of traffic chaos at the Galleys Corner roundabout in Braintree.

The 11-mile section of road, between Dunmow West and the Braintree bypass, completes a 15-mile stretch of dual carriageway linking the town with the M11.

The first part of the project from Stansted to the new Dunmow West junction opened last year.

The long-awaited road improvements have brought renewed fears about traffic chaos at Galleys Corner.

At last week's Braintree Council meeting ward councillor for Cressing, Lynette Flint, voiced concern over whether traffic lights would be installed in time.

She also called for close monitoring of the situation once the new road was open. ''It really does concern me as this will be the first stop on that road from the M11,'' she added.

Council leader Graham Butland said: ''It is an issue of great concern and one we will be in discussion with the county council about. If we are not careful it will become the new Army and Navy roundabout of Essex.''

Highways and transportation network manager Brian Goodwin said the traffic signals should be installed and switched on by Monday. The lights will go up on the approach road from the B1018.''It is not going to be a magic solution,'' warned Mr Goodwin.
