Plans for a state of the art police station in Dunmow have hit a last minute stumbling block, with the county council calling for the proposal to be refused.

Uttlesford district councillors were set to approve the plans at a meeting on Monday when planning officers revealed that they had received an 11th hour objection from the Highways Authority on Friday.

The Essex County Council-controlled authority asked for members to refuse the Smiths Farm plans because of concerns over access to the station.

Cllr Elizabeth Godwin said: "Planning permission being granted is subject to a further exit being worked out, which could be years away.

"We have to have a solution acceptable to this community and Highways, and I would like to see some solution brought back. Otherwise it is a recipe for disaster. Accidents can happen from day one.

"The problems centre on the plans showing only one way of accessing the station, at the front, into Chelmsford Road. The Highways Authority favours the primary access being at the rear via a road set to be built as part of the wider Smiths Farm development."
