Leicester City's 1997 Wembley League Cup winner Spencer Prior was training with Colchester United today.

But U's assistant manager Geraint Williams went to great pains to point out: "Spencer is only coming to train with us. It doesn't mean he is signing."

U's boss Phil Parkinson firmly scotched any links with Prior when the Evening Gazette put it to him nearly a month ago. Parkinson said then: "There's no truth in any of the speculation."

But he did add: "Spencer Prior is a quality player and could be a possibility."

The vastly experienced 34-year-old former Southend, Norwich City, Leicester, Derby County and Manchester City central defender is currently a free agent following his release from Championship (formerly Division One) club Cardiff City at the end of last season.

He boasts a wealth of Football League experience amounting to well over 500 games for his previous six clubs. And he also has a total transfer value of £2,650,000 since his days as a trainee with the U's Essex rivals Southend back in the 1980s.

It is no secret that Parkinson is looking to bring in an experienced centre-half following Player-of-the-Year Alan White's recent departure to Third Division Leyton Orient.
