A third road off Canvey is the "only practical way forward", Essex's transport boss says. But he admits there are still no plans for one.

Rodney Bass, county council portfolio holder for transport, criticised calls for a dual carriageway in Canvey Way.

Speaking at a county council open forum at the Oysterfleet Hotel, Canvey, Mr Bass said: "The dualisation of Canvey Way, which is something that is mentioned by various people with increasing frequency, is not going to happen.

"The only practical way forward for traffic management on Canvey is the much-talked-about third road."

But Mr Bass added there were no plans for that road in a big county scheme being developed at the moment.

The county council has said in the past that any third road off the island could be developed as part of the Thames Gateway scheme.
