An Essex employer is celebrating an award for fighting age discrimination in the workplace.

Chris James, of HBOS, the Halifax in Colchester, won the Age Positive award made to employers and employees who put performance at work before age.

After the presentation by Pensions Minister Malcolm Wicks, Chris James said: "The age diversity within the branch has proved a massive success for customers and colleagues alike, making Halifax Colchester a fun, friendly, yet professional place to visit.

"The key to our tremendous team spirit is our active social calendar, something that is supported by all staff, regardless of age."

He added: "It is clear that employers and individuals are challenging ageist stereotyping and showing it is ability not age that counts in the workplace. Many people over 50 want to work and are prevented from doing so by ageism."
