A vicar is expecting a fight on his hands over a bid to extend a Maldon church.

Much-debated plans have now been officially submitted to Maldon District Council for a £300,000 annexe to All Saints' Church, in High Street.

Canon David Atkins is hoping the addition will get under way as soon as possible but predicts it will be a "drawn-out process".

Angry resident Roy Pipe said Canon Atkins was right to expect opposition.

He said: "We will definitely be fighting tooth and nail. I think it is totally wrong to put something like that on such a lovely church, which is in a conservation area."

People opposed to the plans or undecided about their opinion can have a look at a special model of the structure, which will be built on the south-east corner of the church yard abutting High Street.

The planning application asks for permission to reposition graves, and demolish the wall, brick piers and gates, as well as slightly widening the pavement in Church Walk.

Canon Atkins said: "I suspect this will be a drawn-out process people have made it clear they will fight it all the way along."
