A bevy of beefy builders are proving to be a perfect feast for the eyes as they 'fix it' for Brentwood.

After years of delay shoppers are Brentwood are enjoying a sight they feared they might never see now that the demolition squad has finally moved in to begin the transformation of Brentwood's Bay Tree Centre.

Workmen from Squibb and Davies Demolition have already sealed off part of the delapidated Bay Tree Centre - formerly the Chapel High Shopping Centre - with safety barriers.

A facade of timber screens has gone up behind which will begin a £7.5m refurbishment.

Antony Challis, the site manager for Squibb and Davies Demolition, said the 'rip out' phase would take 15 weeks.

The actual building work is expected to start in late September and the new shopping paradise should all be completed in nine months.

The plans will see the centre expand in size by about 30 per cent. Two new large stores and a health and fitness club will be created, along with two new cafes or coffee shops.

The centre will be fully enclosed and will receive a complete visual makeover, with improved lighting, flooring and a new roof over the central square.
