Now the owners have been told they need planning permission.
In Harwich, a listed house has been given a "drastic" change with a bright yellow makeover, angering the town's conservationists.
The Dragon House Takeaway, in South Street, Manningtree, has been painted a mixture of purple and orange.
Manningtree town councillors at their meeting heard part of the takeaway building was listed and Tendring Council had now asked the owners to make a retrospective application.
Takeaway owner Alan Ngai said: "It's in the hands of my solicitor."
The house, in Church Street, Harwich, was decorated on the outside within the last couple of months.
The issue was raised at a meeting of the Harwich Conservation Panel, which questioned whether planning permission had been sought for the altered exterior.
Mike Page, spokesman for Tendring Council, said: "The owners would certainly need permission, which, as far as I am aware, they have not got."
The owners of the house were unavailable for comment
