One of the outstanding talents on the local non-league soccer scene is joining Canvey as the Islanders set out on their first Nationwide Conference campaign.

Midfielder Jon Keeling had a lenghty and highly-successful spell with Thurrock before joining Conference Dagenham and Redbridge last term.

He finished the campaign with Hornchurch, but is now joining the Park Lane set-up after Keeling himself phoned manager Jeff King while the Gulls' boss was on holiday in Spain pleading for the chance to make it at the highest non-league level.

Said King: "Everyone knows that Jon possesses exceptional talent and, when he came to us saying we were the club he wanted to join we were delighted to give him this chance.
