Southend United supremo Ron Martin has revealed the reasoning behind his decision to counter- sue former Blues Boss Steve Wignall.
The club's co-owner is currently locked in a settlement dispute with the ex-Colchester United chief, who endured a miserable six-month stint in the Roots Hall hot-seat last year.
Wignall has sued because his contract was not paid up when he was sacked in November, but Roots Hall chiefs have lodged a counter claim.
"If someone doesn't perform in their job why should they be paid in full?" declared Martin.
"There's an imbalance in football with both managers and players when it comes to settlements, so I don't see why we should have to pay out."
Martin also claimed Wignall was not diligent enough in his signings, and could not motivate the team.
