Year 8 students at King John School in Shipwrights Drive, Benfleet, came up against their tutors this week in the special event on Wednesday.
Activities included a Hell's Kitchen-type cooking competition, making wacky race cars, which were later zoomed around the playground, and designing eye-catching teen wear.
A school spokesman said: "The fun-packed events were designed to enable pupils to show off their skills in the design and technology area.
"There were lots of laughs for all involved, including the teachers."
