St Bernard's High School, in Westcliff, will receive £100,000 this year and another £100,000 a year for the next four years to invest in music, art and drama within the school and the local community.
It is currently building a four-storey performing arts block which will include drama, dance and music studios.
The cash windfall will be spent on equipping the block with state-of-the-art digital recording and IT facilities.
Headteacher Vikki Squirrell said: "We thought long and hard before deciding to bid for specialist school status. It will enhance our aim of providing each student with a broad and balanced education."
