A new police team set up to probe "cold" cases has been put to work on unsolved Essex murders.

The investigative review team, formed last year, is appealing for new information to help catch the killers of Colchester pensioner Thelma Avis.

They have also been briefed to find out what happened to Clacton mum Sandra Gant, who went missing eight months ago and is believed to have been murdered.

Crimestoppers rewards of up to £5,000 are being offered to anyone who supplies a new lead.

Unlike some of the other deaths under review, which include the murders in 1989 and 1994 of Chelmsford men Martin Broom and Ron Cousins, the Gant and Avis cases were still the subject of ongoing investigations when the review team became involved.

Det Supt Simon Coxall, who is heading the investigations, said: "Cases of this seriousness will never be put to rest."
