Colchester United's match-winning hero Ben May woke up very early today - he just wanted to check he had really scored the last-gasp extra-time goal that knocked Premiership visitors West Bromwich Albion out of the Carling Cup.

Goal star - Ban May is congratulated by his U's teammates after scoring the winner

The big Millwall loanee struck the killer-blow with just two minutes to go at Layer Road last night to propel the U's into the third round, after top scorer Craig Fagan had fired the Coca-Cola League One side into a 29th-minute lead.

"It's without doubt the most important goal I've ever scored," said a jubilant May minutes after the final whistle had sounded.

"I've always said I'm a confident player and hopefully that goal will give me more confidence for our next match."

Ecstatic U's boss Phil Parkinson said: "It was a great time to score a winner and I will be doing all I can to extend Ben's loan which is due to run out shortly.

"To beat a Premiership club in front of a full house was a bit special."
