A champion water skier suffered back and neck injuries in a high-speed accident.

Dave Sewell, 26, of Dunmow, was being towed by a boat at speeds of up to 80mph on Lake Windermere when the incident happened on Saturday afternoon.

He was airlifted to Furness General Hospital by air ambulance.

Paramedic Jenny Edwards, who helped treat Mr Sewell and airlift him to hospital, said the skier was injured after hitting the water hard. He had been taking part in offical races when the accident happened.

Ann Sewell said yesterday her son had broken a vertebra and had been poorly but she hoped he would be discharged from hospital today.

She said Dave, this year's Formula Two European champion and British Formula Two champion, is not going to give up the sport.
