The Widford Bridge on the A1114 is undergoing extensive strengthening and deck replacement.
Both lanes of London Road will be closed while work continues on the site until January 2, 2005.
The Highways Agency said the work was scheduled to be carried out while roads are quieter during the Christmas to new year holidays.
Drivers are advised to avoid the area and leave extra time for their diverted journeys.
