Victory took the U's unbeaten run to 11 League games their best record since promotion to this division seven years ago.
But spare a thought for Saturday's opponents, Torquay, who will not have fond memories of facing the U's. Having denied them promotion in the play-off final in 1998, Colchester sent them spiralling down to League Two on goal difference with this defeat at Layer Road.
Leroy Rosenoir's men only needed a draw to secure their status, but the U's were determined to put their torrid home form behind them they had only won seven League games this season before kick-off and were not prepared to share the points with their desperate opponents.
This, coupled with wins for Milton Keynes Dons and Oldham, resulted in the Gulls being relegated in only their first season back in League One.
Torquay were a shadow of the side that had collected four consecutive victories heading into this final-day showdown and it was Phil Parkinson's outfit that showed the great urgency from the off.
