BIG businesses are next on the hitlist in the bid to save Colchester’s Roman circus.

Campaigners have been overwhelmed with public support to get a heritage centre for the ancient chariot-racing arena.

Dozens of individuals have donated £1,000 or more to help raise the £200,000 needed to get the project off the ground.

After passing the £100,000 mark earlier this week, fundraisers are looking to keep up the momentum by turning to the town’s major employers.

Large town centre stores and multinational companies based at Severalls Business Park are high on the agenda.

Campaigner Bill Hayton said: “Despite the recession, there are companies in Colchester that would still regard £1,000 as a small amount.

“It would be great if big businesses in Colchester got behind the appeal as well.”
