How noble of county councillor Norman Hume to admit it was a mistake to not grit the roads, although it was not his mistake – but one of his staff reading a machine in Tendring!

That’s rubbing salt into our wounds. As head of that department, he is responsible for his officers.

I'm not suggesting he should resign, but honesty would be refreshing.

I hope we are given the reasons behind the whole situation.

I would also like to ask the authorities why aren’t any minor roads, pavements or cycle paths gritted?

As noted previously, the town centre pedestrian areas and cycle paths were a disgrace over Christmas.

Perhaps the Gazette could do some work here and discover the truth by some investigation.

...I can contain myself no longer. I live in Wix and have observed again that the gritting vehicles working flat out are wasting this valuable resource.

The vehicles travel so fast that most ends up not on the road but in the hedges and front gardens and already they are running out. What a joke.

A few years ago when life was a little slower, we had a more efficient service when the grit was laid rather than flung far and wide.

One driver said he didn’t want to slow the traffic, but they are going too fast anyway!

So come on, let’s apply some common sense to the job in hand.
