A LOLLIPOP lady is still seeing children safely to school after 30 years.

Doreen Fitt has been patrolling the pavements outside St George’s New Town infant and junior schools, in Colchester, for three decades.

She has more than earned a rest after braving all weathers since taking up her lollipop stick in 1980,.

But the gran-of-two, 59, said she had no intention of quitting. She said: “No way. I love the job too much. It is great watching all the children grow up, right from nursery until they go off to secondary school.”

Mrs Fitt previously worked as a lollipop lady in the 1970s, helping St George’s children across Mersea Road, before taking a break to have her own children.

Her current post, outside the junior school gates in Canterbury Road, became available when her predecessor was involved in a road accident on the job and decided not to return to duty.
