AN ARMY driver is taking to the airwaves with his own local radio show in Colchester.

Pte David “Geordie” Balshaw, of Colchester-based 16 Medical Regiment, has just started a weekly show on the town’s Army station, 107 Garrison FM.

The 23-year-old soldier now hosts a weekly 6pm until 8pm Monday show, mixing music and chat. He said: “This is a great opportunity for me.

“I love to do a bit of MCing at parties and discos, so this takes it a big leap. I can’t believe I’m part of the Army’s radio team and I’ve enjoyed being trained up. I promise to try to make sure that people can understand my Geordie accent, too!”

Liz Mullen, the Homefield Road-based station’s main presenter, said: “Our last Army broadcaster was a wife, and when she left, I wanted to take on a soldier to carry on the good work. Geordie was so enthusiastic I had to choose him.”
