LIFEBOAT crews were called to the aid of a suspected asylum seeker who reportedly jumped from a ship into Harwich harbour.

Harwich Inshore Lifeboat was returning from helping a vessel with engine failure when it was called to the aid of the man at about 9.10am on Saturday.

Nick Moulton, Thames Coastguard watch officer, said the man was treated for suspected broken ribs and mild hypothermia.

“There was a person in the water at Harwich harbour and it is thought they came from the Stenna Britannica.

“The ambulance service and the police were called and the lifeboat took the person to the lifeboat house at Harwich at about 9.20am.

“The UK border agency was also involved.”

It is thought the man was treated by the East of England Ambulance Service before being left in the care of the UK Border Agency.
