Clothing chain Next wants to open a bigger store in Colchester town centre.

The company has put its present shop, which sits between the High Street and Culver Street West, on the market, and says it is looking for a more spacious one.

Mark Segal, from the company’s agent, Brasier Freeth, said it has two possible buildings in mind, but would not say where they were.

He added Next hoped to be able to move next summer, if it could find another trader willing to take over its existing £185,000 lease which runs until March, 2014.

Mr Segal said: “The present store is not ideal, being on three levels. There are two options Next can take.

“It is looking at the terms on one property and there is another it could also take, however it would need to dispose of its existing lease.”

Rebecca Young, a Next spokesman, said: “We are looking at the idea of a larger store. There are no threats to jobs.”

Next’s current, 750-square metre shop is on three levels.

In August, discount trader QD announced it was trying to take over the former Woolworth’s store, in Culver Square.

However, the move has currently stalled while it tries to find a new tenant for its present St John’s Street shop.
