A BURGLAR broke into a secure block of bedsits and is not believed to have left until six hours later.

The intruder was spotted on CCTV at 12.40am on Sunday, outside Jackson House, in Honorius Drive, High Woods, Colchester.

He got into a bedsit within the property, which is run by Springboard Housing Association, through a set of French doors.

Once inside, he stole £95 and a debit card, but did not disturb the occupant, who slept through the entire incident.

However, it is believed the burglar may not have left the house until he was spotted on CCTV at 6.40am.

Police are not certain where he was during this time, or what he was doing, and are appealing for help in catching the thief.

Diana Evans, a spokesman for the Genesis Housing Group, which runs Springboard Housing Association, said: “It is natural to feel concerned after a burglary, but we at Springboard take security very seriously.

“We have a sleep-in support worker each night, as well as good CCTV coverage around the building.

“This incident occurred because a resident left his door open after stepping out into the garden for a cigarette.”

Investigating officer Det Con Tim Harris, from Colchester CID, said: “We are extremely concerned about any form of crime where victims have been burgled while they are in the premises because of the obvious risk.

“We would urgently appeal for witnesses to come forward. It is worrying, but we have reassured residents in the area and we are actively patrolling to ensure they feel safe.

“If you have any concerns or any information to provide, contact your local neighbourhood support officer or call me directly on 0300 3334444.

“You can remain anonymous and any information will be treated with the utmost confidence.”

Police are particularly keen to hear from anyone who spotted a man lurking around in the street or gardens in the area.

Anyone with information should call Colchester police on 0300 3334444 or Crimestoppers on 0800 111555.
