A MAN charged with murder, who was released from prison by mistake, has given himself up.

Jason Bethell, 31, of Broadway, Jaywick, was remanded in custody to Chelmsford Prison after being charged last week with the murder of John Smith.

He had been mistakenly released from custody yesterday.

Police launch a manhunt and last night Bethell handed himself in at Clacton police station. He will be returned to prison to await trial.

The Prisons Service say they are investigating how Bethell was released.
