WHAT a clock up!
Manningtree’s new clock may have been getting passers by in a numerical muddle.
Back and ticking again this week, the numbers seven and eight on the clock face are the wrong way round.
The blunder went unnoticed for several hours and now red-faced rotarians, who maintain the clock, have decided to leave it as it is for the time being.
Lawford resident and parish councillor Lesley Pallett said: "I was selling poppies when a child pointed out that the seven and the eight are in the wrong position.
"It's been causing a bit of amusement.
"Everyone has been pointing it out to people passing by.
"It's amazing how many people have stared at it and not noticed."
A staff member at the town’s Red Lion pub, where the town’s rotary club meet, added: “The people responsible for it were in last night and they were very embarrassed.
“They have been waiting for the clock to be fixed for some time. They didn’t notice themselves.”
Rotarian David Shearmur said: “Somehow the numbers are in the wrong order. I think it goes something like one, two, three, four, five, six, eight, seven, nine.
“I don’t know how this happened, what do to and how it was overlooked.”
“The rotary club had a good laugh about it last night and we decided to leave it at the moment because we think it will become a fascinating talking point in the town.”
“Never before in the UK has it happened, as far as I know,” he added.
The clock on the Natwest bank building in High Street taken away and repaired after it was damaged by yobs in August.
It needed parts from Japan in order to be repaired but it is not known who is responsible for the blunder.
The clock was switched on again on Wednesday before the mistake was spotted.
