IT’S all go for this year’s Wivenhoe May Fair, but if you can’t wait until the bank holiday, organisers have a few gigs to whet your appetites.

A series of warm up gigs and fundraising events will be taking place this weekend spread around the pubs in the lower end of the town.

Kicking off the weekend is the Led Zeppelin/Bowie-inspired blues band, Bone Chain, who will be rocking the Rose and Crown on Wivenhoe Quay from 8.30pm on Friday.

Saturday night sees the Buccaneer disco walk the plank at the Station pub with insane pirate action featuring huge disco tunes from DJs Cheesy Rider, Lala, and Big In The Seventies.

The weekend rounds off in style on Sunday afternoon with the Guitars in the Garden open mic session from 2pm at the Greyhound on the High Street.

This will be the chance for budding musicians to become a star and play guitar, fiddle, spoons or whatever they fancy during an afternoon of live music and fun.

Jon Chamberlain, one of the May Fair organisers, said: “We couldn’t wait for this year’s May Fair, so decided to start early with a series of tuneful fundraising events. ”

The Wivenhoe May Fair is a community-based free music, comedy and spoken word festival run by volunteers.

It takes place on King George V Playing Fields on May 25. For details, go to www.wivenhoemayfair.com
