ARSONISTS are risking lives every time they target firing ranges in Colchester, it has been claimed.

A recent rise in petty vandalism and arson at Middlewick Ranges, off Mersea Road, is causing concern for councillors and the fire service.

Colchester fire crews have attended a spate of calls in the last couple of weeks as firebugs have once again plagued the area.

Trevor Hearn, of Colchester fire station’s blue watch, said: “There is a danger we could be called to a fire at the ranges when a far more life-threatening incident comes in and we would be unable to attend.”

The latest calls came at 6.45pm and 7pm on Sunday, both to small grass fires.

Councillor Terry Sutton (Con, Berechurch) said he was concerned at the wider-ranging impact.

He said: “Realistically, a fire of that nature would be essentially low-key in comparison with a house or flat on fire.

“What the urchins need to realise is that the fire engine being used to put out their fire will not be able to get to a fire that could involve their family.”

Youths are believed to be responsible for lighting dozens of small grass fires on the Ministry of Defence firing ranges over the past few years and this resurfaced after going quiet for eight months.

The incidents are all being investigated by police.

Pragati Baddhan, of Defence Estates, said: “Middlewick Ranges has been a regular target for vandals over recent years. These attacks are costing the taxpayer in excess of £15,000 annually and, on occasions, have denied operational training units the use of this very important training facility.

“We have sought planning permission to erect a fence around the range to keep vandals out.”
