Water supplies were cut off at Essex’s fire service headquarters after contractors working on the A12 destroyed a pipe.

The accident on Friday did not affect emergency 999 calls but 100 members of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service (ECFRS) staff had to work elsewhere for the day as the Kelvedon HQ was closed.

Contractors working on the A12 destroyed the pipe leading up to a water meter at Kelvedon Park, the main office just off the A12 in Kelvedon - meaning all water supplies were cut off at the fire service’s nerve centre.

The incident happened alongside the A12 so in a bid to minimise disruption ECFRS and the contractors agreed for the three-hour repair to be carried out at night and was finished by Monday.
