A new novella set along the north Essex coastline is capturing imaginations with its tale of loss, healing, and unexpected friendship.

Clem Luxford, a Manningtree author and translator, has published Sands of Solace, the first in a trilogy of novellas inspired by the Stour Estuary.

The story follows Morten, a successful Danish businessman whose seemingly perfect life in London falls apart after a personal tragedy.

Seeking space to recover, he travels to his company’s warehouse in Harwich and unexpectedly discovers the quiet beach-hut community at Wrabness.

Surrounded by salt marshes, mudflats and the ever-changing estuary, he begins a journey of healing with the help of a stray cat known as Beach Cat Jack.

Mr Luxford said: "Having experienced divorce, grief and loneliness myself, I know how difficult it can be to pick up the pieces and rebuild your life.

"I wanted to write something that showed how unexpected friendships and finding peace in simple things can help us move forward."

Originally from Saffron Walden, Mr Luxford lived in Denmark for 22 years before moving to Manningtree in 2012. He has known the area since the 1980s.

He is a freelance Danish-to-English translator.

The novella features locations including Manningtree, Mistley, Harwich, and Wrabness.

Mr Luxford said: "The Stour Estuary is a special place, and I wanted it to become almost another character in the story.

"I hope local readers will enjoy recognising the places they know and perhaps see them in a different light."

The book’s cover was designed by his wife, Sam, a Manningtree artist and owner of NaviStitch.

Sands of Solace is available on Amazon in paperback for £5.75 and as an eBook for £1.99.

Signed copies can also be purchased at NaviStitch on Manningtree High Street and Wrabness Community Shop.
