Homeowners have been warned ahead of spider season, with the eight-legged friends soon to invade homes this autumn.

In the UK, spider season typically peaks between late August and October, when adult male house spiders become much more visible as they leave their webs in search of mates.

Despite the perception of an invasion, experts say the phenomenon is largely driven by male spiders becoming more active as they search for mates.

The season typically peaks between late August and October, when larger house spiders are more likely to be seen crossing floors, climbing walls or appearing in baths.

Cooler temperatures can also encourage spiders to seek shelter indoors.

While many people find them unsettling, most UK spiders are harmless and play a useful role in controlling flies and other insects.

Homeowners looking to reduce spider numbers are advised to seal gaps around doors and windows, vacuum regularly and keep storage areas tidy.

Experts also recommend reducing insect activity around the home, as spiders are attracted to places where food is plentiful.

Why are there suddenly so many spiders?

  • Most spiders have been in or around homes all year, but they are usually hidden.
  • During autumn, males roam more widely looking for females, making them easier to spot.
  • Cooler weather can encourage spiders to seek shelter in houses, garages and sheds.

How to tackle spider season

Practical advice commonly recommended includes:

  • Seal entry points such as gaps around doors, windows and pipework.
  • Keep rooms clutter-free, particularly lofts, garages and storage areas where spiders like to hide.
  • Vacuum regularly, including corners, skirting boards and behind furniture, to remove webs and egg sacs.
  • Reduce insects indoors, as spiders follow their food source. Outdoor lighting near open windows can attract insects and, in turn, spiders.
  • Consider window screens or draught excluders to limit access.
