The A12 has reopened after being closed in both directions due to a police incident.

The closure, between Junctions 29 and 27, near Colchester, was put in place following concerns for a person’s welfare.

A spokesperson for Essex Police said: "We were called to the scene of concerns for the welfare of a person in the area of the A12, close to Colchester Road, at about 9am on Thursday 3 September.

"Traffic was stopped in both directions on the A12 while we worked with fire and ambulance colleagues.

"Thankfully this person is now safe and was reopened at about 10.50am."

The incident caused significant disruption, with delays of more than an hour reported.

Drivers were forced to divert through Colchester, leading to congestion on surrounding routes including Ipswich Road, Via Urbis Romanae, and London Road.

Police have warned that traffic remains heavy and could take some time to clear.

They are advising motorists to plan ahead and allow extra time for their journeys.

Although the A12 has now fully reopened, National Highways has advised that residual delays of around 20 minutes should still be expected in the area.
