National Highways has issued a diversion route for the A12 after the road was closed in both directions near Colchester this morning due to a police-led incident.
The closure, between junctions 27 and 29, began shortly after 9.30am this morning and is causing severe delays.
Emergency services are at the scene, and traffic sensors are reporting severe delays on both the northbound and southbound carriageways.
Drivers using the northbound A12 are being advised to exit at junction 27 and follow the road to Spring Lane Roundabout, taking the second exit onto the A133 through Colchester.
At the roundabout with the A1232 (Ipswich Road), they should take the first exit and continue north on the A1232, rejoining the A12 at junction 29.
Southbound drivers should exit at junction 29 and take the second exit onto the A1232.

At the roundabout with St Andrew's Avenue and Cowdray Avenue, take the third exit onto the A133.
Continue through Colchester until the Spring Lane Roundabout, then take the second exit to rejoin the A12 at junction 27.
Motorists are being warned to expect delays.
Drivers are advised to allow for extra journey time, and to plan ahead to avoid delaying their journey.
