ESSEX Highways has released an update about two major construction works in Colchester.

The organisation is currently working on regenerating St Botolph's Circus and the East Hill improvement works.

As part of the St Botolph's works, Southway has been reduced to a single lane approaching the junction and across the roundabout towards Magdalen Street.

A spokesperson said: "Unfortunately, due to a number of drivers choosing to ignore the temporary pedestrian crossing, we have taken the decision to reduce Southway to a single lane.

"The safety of pedestrians and all road users is our highest priority. We are working with the contractor, traffic management team and Essex Police to explore longer-term solutions while the works continue."

Following the introduction of the temporary pedestrian crossing, the subways at St Botolph’s are now closed.

Works have also started within the subways, and over the coming days the team will be surveying of the subway lighting to enable its safe removal.

The team will also begin carefully removing artwork from the subway walls.

Works on East Hill remains on schedule, according to Essex Highways. The team continues to focus on installing the new kerb lines on the south side of the road.

Works are also underway on the construction of the bus stop and the widening of the crossing point.

While these works are underway, a temporary crossing point has been installed.

The team continues to monitor the traffic management arrangements to ensure they operate as efficiently and effectively as possible and are working closely with the St Botolph’s site team.
