RESIDENTS say they are living with a “stinking mess” after claiming communal bins for their flats have not been collected for more than a year.
Rubbish has been piling up at the communal bin area for flats in Wickham Road, Witham, with residents describing worsening conditions and a lack of accountability from those responsible for managing the waste.
The bins are overflowing with rubbish, with more binbags stacked and laid atop the communal bins.
Cardboard and plastic storage boxes have also been used in an attempt to contain the refuse, without success.
One resident said he had repeatedly raised the issue with managing agent First Port and Braintree Council over the past year, but with little success.
He said: “No one cares. No one has taken responsibility. It’s a stinking mess.
“God knows what’s going on if you delve into there.
“Residents know what other residents feel about it.”
Braintree Council said it was aware of instances where excess waste had built up at communal properties, and confirmed additional collections had been arranged in some cases to deal with rising volumes.

A spokesperson at Braintree Council said: "The council is aware of occasions where excess waste has been reported at communal properties and where additional collections have been required to address increases in waste volumes.
“In the first instance, the management and day-to-day oversight of communal waste storage areas is the responsibility of the managing agent.
“We work with managing agents where issues are raised to help ensure appropriate arrangements are in place. We ask residents to dispose of their waste correctly and make use of the facilities provided.
“Where concerns arise regarding communal waste areas, residents should report them so that they can be investigated and addressed as appropriate.
“The council will continue to work with relevant parties to support the effective management of communal waste and recycling facilities."
The management company First Port has been contacted for comment.
