Students preparing for university this autumn could pocket up to £220 in free cash and takeaway vouchers simply by choosing the right bank account.

With thousands of freshers set to open student accounts over the coming weeks, banks have once again launched a battle to tempt new customers with generous sign-up deals worth hundreds of pounds.

This year's standout offer comes from Nationwide Building Society, which is giving eligible students £100 in cash plus £120 in Just Eat vouchers – a package worth £220.

Close behind is Lloyds Bank, which is matching the £100 cash incentive and offering up to £120 in Deliveroo vouchers, while NatWest is paying £100 and including a four-year tastecard membership packed with restaurant discounts.

Meanwhile, Santander is sticking with its popular free four-year Railcard, potentially saving regular travellers hundreds of pounds over the course of a degree.

Don't choose a bank just for the freebie

While the welcome gifts look tempting, finance experts warn students should look beyond the headline offers.

Caitlyn Eastell, personal finance analyst at Moneyfactscompare.co.uk, said students should compare the whole package before signing up.

She said: "Free cash and vouchers can make one student account stand out from another, but it's important students compare the overall package before being swayed by incentives.

"An interest-free overdraft could provide greater value over the course of a degree than a one-off freebie."

Students expecting to rely on borrowing should pay particular attention to overdraft limits.

NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland currently offer interest-free overdrafts of up to £3,250 by the end of a degree, while HSBC and Nationwide both increase to £3,000.

However, Eastell warned overdrafts should only be treated as a safety net.

"Every pound borrowed will need repaying, so taking on part-time work or sticking to a realistic budget can help avoid leaving university with unnecessary debt," she said.

Which bank freebie is actually best?

For students who regularly order takeaways, Nationwide and Lloyds arguably offer the strongest incentives, with food vouchers worth £120 on top of £100 cash.

Those travelling home frequently may get better long-term value from Santander's free Railcard, while keen diners could save more with NatWest's four-year tastecard.

The best account ultimately depends on how you'll use it. A larger interest-free overdraft, fee-free spending abroad and budgeting tools could prove far more valuable over three years than a one-off welcome bonus.

With many of the offers only available for a limited time and subject to eligibility criteria, students heading to university this autumn may want to compare deals before opening their first account.
