Cyclists of all ages came together to celebrate another successful year of Essex Pedal Power during a special anniversary event.
The Big Ride Out saw riders from across Essex join group rides in their communities, bringing together participants, staff and volunteers for a day focused on achievement, wellbeing and connection.
A total of 44 people took part, including Essex Pedal Power volunteers and staff members.
Among them was a team of five cyclists who completed an impressive 85-mile ride to mark the impact of the scheme, which has distributed thousands of free bikes across Essex since 2021.
The event highlighted how cycling can bring people together and help build confidence.
In Colchester, participants overcame personal challenges, including concerns about joining group rides.
One rider, Emmanuel, who enjoys repairing bicycles and helping others, led part of the route, while regular cyclist Emma said the experience had helped her grow in confidence and connect with others.
She added: “I felt supported throughout the ride and encouraged to go at my own pace. Cycling along the Wivenhoe Trail was a calm and enjoyable experience.”
The scheme brought together participants from across generations, with the youngest rider aged just four years old and the oldest participant an impressive 85.
Among those taking part was six-year-old Clark, who learnt to ride through the programme when he was four.
His mother, Wendy, said: “We had such a brilliant time. It was wonderful to get out together as a family and enjoy an afternoon of exercise, challenge and meeting like-minded people.
“It was especially meaningful for us to celebrate our youngest son's achievement alongside so many supportive people.”
One of the biggest moments of the day came in Harwich, where cyclists gathered to welcome the five riders completing the 85-mile challenge.
Cheers and applause greeted the long-distance team as they crossed the finish line, creating what organisers described as a fitting celebration of determination and community spirit.
Councillor David King, deputy leader of Colchester Council, added: “This event reflected everything Essex Pedal Power has achieved over the last few years: helping people learn to ride, building confidence, improving wellbeing, and creating stronger, more connected communities through cycling.”
