Colchester drivers are set to face a lengthy diversion while a busy road is closed for works.

Anglian Water is set to carry out roadworks on Mersea Road near Abberton between June 30 and July 2.

Traffic information published for drivers says a diversion will be in force at all times for works listed as a “new connection”.

A diversion route will be in place while the road is closed.

A route description attached to the notice shows a diversion of about 15.3 miles, with an estimated journey time of 28 minutes.

The signed route begins on Mersea Road before continuing via Roman Hill, Blackheath, Berechurch Hall Road, Layer Road, High Road, Birch Road, Church Road, Wigborough Road, Colchester Road, Maldon Road, Peldon Road and Lower Road before returning to Mersea Road.

Motorists travelling through the area have been advised to allow extra time for their journeys while the works are in place
