A large industrial container has been dumped in a lay-by off the A12.
The container was abandoned off the major route in Colchester and believed to be “full and extremely heavy,” prompting fears of illegal dumping.
Colchester City Council is appealing for information and says the cost of removing the container will be significant, ultimately falling on local taxpayers.
Councillor Martin Goss, portfolio holder for waste, neighbourhoods and leisure, said: "This appears to be a deliberate act of illegal dumping involving a large, heavy container.
"The cost of safely removing and disposing of it will be considerable, and that cost ultimately falls to local taxpayers.
"We are determined to identify those responsible and would urge anyone who may have seen something, however minor it may seem, to come forward.

The council says officers will place an abandoned vehicle notice on the container and plan to remove it if no owner comes forward.
They are asking the public for help, particularly anyone who may have dashcam footage or who saw the container being left in the lay-by on the London-bound side of the A12, just after Junction 27.
