A vintage steam‑hauled train will run through East Anglia to Winchester’s atmospheric cathedral Christmas market and Highclere Castle this December.

Hosted by Steam Dreams Rail Co, the journey will begin in Bury St Edmunds before heading through stations such as Ipswich, Colchester and Chelmsford.

From East Anglia you board vintage carriages behind a heritage steam locomotive, joining the train in London as it heads south and west across the country towards Hampshire.

The journey and destination

It is sold as a full‑day outing - leaving East Anglia in the morning, travelling via Colchester and other Essex stops.

Passengers will spend several hours at your chosen destination before returning the same day.

The trip offers a choice between visiting Highclere - best known as the Downton Abbey location or Winchester, where the cathedral‑side Christmas Market runs with traditional wooden chalets, food and gift stalls in the historic close.

Onboard experience

Steam Dreams markets these as nostalgic, “golden age of rail” experiences, typically with allocated seats in different classes and food and drink options served at your seat.

It is essentially a turn‑up‑and‑relax festive day trip - you avoid driving, get a scenic steam‑hauled run across winter countryside, and are dropped close enough to walk to the Christmas market or attraction before re‑joining the same train home.

Who it's for

The trip is targeted at passengers wanting a car‑free festive day out, rail enthusiasts, and anyone looking for a Christmas market trip with the added draw of steam‑train travel.

Booking and prices

Advance booking is required via their website, with a choice of seating classes and add‑on dining packages (subject to availability)

From the trip page, prices vary by class of travel and whether you add the Highclere visit.

  • Highclere Castle visit supplement – from £78 per person (added on top of your train fare).
  • Pullman Dining (full dining experience) – from £465 per person.
  • First Class (non‑dining) – from £245 per person.
