Search the Public Notice PortalA major road scheme aimed at improving walking and cycling on East Hill in Colchester will get under way in the coming weeks.
The scheme is funded by the Town Deal to better connect the city centre with Greenstead, the University of Essex, and the new Tendring Colchester Borders Garden Community walking and cycling network.
Octavius Infrastructure has been appointed to deliver the East Hill project following a competitive tender process, subject to finalising contracts.
Construction is expected to take up to 12 months and completion is planned for mid-2027.
An Essex County Council spokesperson said: "The scheme will provide safer, greener, healthier travel options for those with access to a car, or who want to help us reduce the pressure on our network.
"It will help support the significant development planned to the east of the city, and the large number of students based at the university.
"Walking and cycling links into the city centre will be strengthened and connected to national cycling routes."
The improvements will include new cycleways and pavements, upgraded crossing facilities, improved bus stops, with dedicated waiting areas, new parking arrangements, raised sections on side roads to improve accessibility, road resurfacing, and the introduction of a 20mph speed limit.
Work will be coordinated with the St Botolph’s contractor and in collaboration with Colchester Council to ensure works are aligned.
A Colchester Council spokesperson said: "Work starting on East Hill is another important step in improving how people get in and around Colchester.
"The upgrades will make routine journeys safer and easier for people walking and cycling between the city centre, Greenstead and the University of Essex.
"Better connections like this help bring more people into the city centre, supporting local businesses and the wider economy.
"Alongside other improvements already underway, it shows that regeneration in Colchester isn’t an aspiration – it’s happening now and is making a real difference."
The project team aims to prioritise minimising disruption for residents and businesses, and will provide regular updates and clear communication about works and travel impacts.
