Tucked away on the historic green in Great Bentley in Essex, The Plough has become far more than just a village pub.
It is a cornerstone of the community, a destination for food lovers, and even a regular haunt for Clacton MP and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage.
Run by Dean Patel and Benjamin Patel, and managed by Saba Pollock, the pub has undergone a remarkable transformation since being taken over in 2018.

Benjamin said: “It’s a pub that’s been here now over 200 years. We bought it in 2018, taking over full refurbishments — inside, extensions, the garden, front spaces — everything.
"It’s probably at the heart of the village.”
Set against one of the largest village greens in the country, the Plough blends heritage with a fresh, modern offering.
Its welcoming atmosphere is something Benjamin is especially proud of.
“It’s about the village getting together. Our staff, the locals — everyone’s happy. It’s like a family feel,” he says.
That sense of warmth is matched by the food. During my visit, I tried the lamb rump and the scotch eggs — both were exceptional.
The lamb was cooked to perfection, tender and full of flavour, while the scotch eggs were a standout, made with fresh, high-quality ingredients that elevated a classic British staple.
It’s clear the kitchen takes pride in delivering what Benjamin calls “proper British food — fresh produce, great taste, great service”.

The pub’s reputation has not gone unnoticed.
Nigel Farage, who visits regularly when in Tendring, is a vocal fan.
“Yeah, I visit quite regularly,” he told me.
“Love the pub, love the governor. Dean Patel is fantastic — he’s a character. He’s spent a lot of money on beautiful gardens, and of course, it’s a place with fantastic history.”
That history, combined with ongoing investment, has helped the Plough thrive.

The team hosts a packed calendar of events, from charity fundraisers to summer celebrations, and large-scale screenings of major sporting events.
“We’ve got a lot on this summer,” Benjamin said. “Events, the World Cup, community days — it’s going to be busy.”
With the 'Best pub of the year' title for two years in a row, and glowing reviews from villagers and visitors alike, the Plough continues to live up to its ethos: great food, great drink and a great sense of belonging.
In Great Bentley, it’s not just a pub — it’s the heart of the village.
