Search the Public Notice PortalTHE FATE of the East Hill cycle lane development is still undecided as concerns are raised that two of the city's major developments will cause significant congestion.
The East Hill cycle lane works was first expected to start in January to coincide with redevelopment of the junction at St Botolph's Circus, before being delayed to this summer and spring respectively.
Team Colchester – a partnership between Colchester Council and Essex County Council - said the decision on whether to proceed with the East Hill scheme is in the final stages of governance.
This is due to a pause to consider the updated Department for Transport design guidance.
The group said once a contractor is appointed, a detailed programme of works will be confirmed.
Team Colchester has further revealed where the compounds – typically fenced building sites – will be for both developments.
For the East Hill Scheme, the proposed temporary compound would be located within the existing barriered areas behind Firstsite.
For the St Botolph’s project, the temporary compound will be located on the vacant site behind the Magistrates’ Court, south of the railway line.
Both sites are not accessible to the public or in an area of high footfall and a map was unavailable.
Sir Bob Russell, High Steward of Colchester, said: “Both schemes are an extravagant waste of taxpayers’ money because neither of them will be a positive benefit to Colchester
“The objections to the cycle lane on East Hill in both directions are such that there is a hope that consensus will prevail and that ludicrous scheme will not go forward.”
“It is quite clear that although the compound is in close proximity to St Botolph’s, it will add to the congestion and chaos.
“My advice to motorists is to stay away from the St Botolph’s roundabout.”

A spokesperson from Team Colchester said the locations have been chosen to minimise disruption and are adjacent to the worksites to minimise construction traffic.
The spokesperson said: “This includes being adjacent to the worksites to help minimise construction traffic.
“The compounds are not expected to move during the works however this would be a decision for the contractors.
The spokesperson said the compounds would be small, kept tidy, and removed once completed.
